Similarities

And yet again

We make similar mistakes

Akin to Ghalib, I too

Love that faithless beauty

So I went to the tavern

With a mask on my face

And I found that even the pious

Can lose their clothes in ecstasy

Therefore do not be annoyed

When they accuse you

Of being in love

They are merely jealous

I will tell you as a friend

I could make little of people

Some of them make you

Others seek to unmake you

And I got a lot of advice

Opinions, Voices, Thoughts

Yet I only

Listen to you

Though you are a stone

I have seen you tremble

I have seen you in pain

With tears in your beautiful eyes

I of course, Am in love

But you my dear

Why do you

Suffer her insolence?

The Lotus

A recent discussion with a friend concerning new technology and the advances made in ceramics led me to read more on the subject. As the internet takes sleepless individuals stumbling across links, I read about nanotech and how nature, particularly the lotus, is being used to understand how things can be made water repellent. Learning more about this quite unique (and symbolically important flower) took me to an image which struck me deeply. In my mind’s eye, I saw it as flames shooting out of the water.

Lotus in water urdu poetry

A red lotus in blue water…

It is interesting to me that fire and water can coexist so beautifully in nature as they do. An example which comes to mind is the magnificence of undersea volcanoes. If you would permit me a slight digression from the exact science, it seems that in that particular place, liquid fire battles liquid water. As the thoughts ran in my mind along with the image of the red lotus, a poor ghazal formed which I present below:

The red lotus appears as a flame

Upon still waters

It dances

With light

So do not tire of this journey

Look, there it is

Just beyond the desert

An oasis

Such as reverence

Such is worship

Her sight

Draws tears from my eyes

All arrangements made

All said and done

There is wine and strong drink

I just await you

That old tale

Draws jewels from your eyes

It was not your fault

Why do you cry?

Should I recount

The mistakes I made

Not just one or two

But by the thousands

No flower, nor its scent

Nor its shape

If this is spring

It is a strange one

But I do like this

Moonless night

The veiled moon

Hides my darkest desires

And what did you gain?

By bringing me to tears

Now you are hurt

Just as I am

Who can understand

The logic behind this

The source of this life giving water

Is but a dead rocky mountain

I stand amazed

That you too defrauded me

But yet I say

I trust you completely

And he is but

Her obedient servant

Neither well known nor rich

Just a humble man

Forgiveness…

The notion of seeking and asking for forgiveness is a very complex one. Particularly when there are nuances you want to observe with regard to the act of seeking forgiveness. However, I believe that seeking forgiveness is important, despite many of us seldom understanding how it should be sought. It is not an internal forgiveness since I believe that human beings are very good at explaining things to themselves and giving excuses to themselves for their behavior.

I think that forgiveness has to be sought from others, for the things we did and perhaps more importantly, for the things we did not do. On the subject of forgiveness and the various manners it can be sought in, I was inspired to write a ghazal that I present below.  You might note that the words “Mujhe Maaf karna” i.e. forgive me hold several different meanings in each verse and I hope this poor effort amuses you in some measure.

j

In god’s temples

You present drunken salutes? Shame!

Oh lord of gifts and punishments

Forgive me

j

The moon and the atmosphere

May lead me to commit

A few mistakes

Please forgive me if I do

j

To the ill voiced rival I say

Please continue

What you have to say

Forgive the interruption

j

I could not follow

The hate I was taught

If that’s the right path I break from it

Forgive me

j

Why should I listen

To the narrow minded preacher

With poor manners

I’m better off not listening

j

Who do you dare

relate to?

Rumi, Hafiz and Khayam?

Hah! Please forgive me!
