When something hurts me
I am reminded of her
Winter nights
Remind me of her
Oftimes, I see her in the moon
I like the moonlight
Though it does
Remind me of her
I see the river of time
Waves of joy and sorrow
One after the other
Remind me of her
I would have wept away
Her memory
Sadly the tears
Bring back more memories
I remember it was similar weather
When we met
I hate this weather now
It reminds me of her
So I tried to forget her
Looking at the world’s sorrows
It was a fool’s errand
It does not remove memories
The words end
And so do the night’s revelries
The candle flickers
It reminds me of her
…beautiful…

There is a nuanced sensitivity in this ghazal – of a muted pain that lingers in rememberance of the beloved, of its unexpected reminders and finally the helplessness with which one gives into it in spite of all worldly efforts to forget.
All very beautifully captured indeed.
The eternal quality of this rememberance captured in the image if a flickering candle is almost haunting, and probably the most profound: A tiny flame reminiscent of the once burning desire – How easy would it be to simply put it out with just one breath!
But as you say, the nights revelries ended, and one can not help but look at the tiny flickering flame and remember once again.
Simply brilliant! 🙂

Thank you so much for your kind words… I really appreciate that you saw the “brief candle” and you’ve explained the ghazal much better than I ever could 🙂

It has a ring of a song to it. Perhaps because of the continuous theme or the unusual length of radeef.

Thank you. I was advised by Dr. Pervazi to ensure that the ghazal could be hummed or sang to make sure the balance is proper. 🙂
